Empowering Ethnic Minority Communities through Sustainable Livelihoods

DATO has been steadfast in its mission to create sustainable livelihoods for ethnic minority communities by transitioning from low-income crops like rice and cassava to high-value medicinal herbs and spices. Through strategic investments, technical support, and guaranteed market linkages, DATO is driving both economic growth and social impact in Đăk Tô.

In 2019, DATO introduced wild bitter melon to Đăk Tô, starting with only 0.3 hectares. Today, this has expanded to over 15 hectares, all cultivated under GACP-WHO standards.

From 2020 to this year, the company invested in Ngoc Linh ginseng (Dang Shen) cultivation, developing more than 10 hectares under the same standards to ensure both quality and sustainability.

  • In 2022, DATO launched a pilot project with over 10 tons of ginger and turmeric seedlings, empowering local households to adopt more profitable and resilient crops.
  • In 2023, DATO distributed over 80 tons of high-quality turmeric seedlings.
  • In 2024, this number increased to more than 100 tons to expand cultivation areas across remote communes.
  • In 2025, we are continuing our efforts with over 60 tons of turmeric seedlings, alongside 50 tons of ginger seedlings and fertilizers to boost both yield and quality.

This journey has empowered of families to escape poverty, achieve economic independence, and grow prosperity in their homeland. Today, the expansion of spice and medicinal herb cultivation areas is not just an agricultural shift—it is a catalyst for community transformation, reflecting DATO’s dual mission of economic impact and social responsibility.

  • DATO believes that creating sustainable livelihoods is not only about introducing high-value crops but also about building knowledge and transforming mindsets. For this reason, DATO places strong emphasis on technical training programs for ethnic minority farmers.
  • Our training sessions are designed to be practical and hands-on, covering every step of the process — from soil preparation, seed selection, and crop care to harvesting, preliminary processing, and storage — all aligned with international export standards. DATO’s technical team regularly visits the farms, providing on-site guidance and coaching to ensure that farmers not only follow the correct techniques but also understand why these practices matter for quality and sustainability.
  • In addition, DATO organizes workshops on global market trends, quality requirements, and international buyer expectations, empowering local farmers with the confidence that their products can reach global markets when cultivated with the right methods.
  • Through “Education – Transforming Mindsets”, DATO has helped farmers upgrade their skills, adopt professional farming practices, and shift from subsistence agriculture to market-oriented production. This knowledge transfer is a key driver enabling families to escape poverty, achieve economic stability, and build long-term prosperity.

Education and Women Empowerment

  • Alongside developing sustainable farming models, DATO is deeply committed to empowering women from ethnic minority communities. We believe that true social impact starts with gender equality and inclusive opportunities.
  • DATO organizes gender awareness and equality training programs, combined with capacity-building workshops, to help women gain confidence and leadership in both farming and decision-making.
  • Through targeted support, we have provided ginger seedlings for bag cultivation models and high-quality turmeric seedlings, enabling women’s groups to experiment with innovative farming techniques and increase household income.
  • During the export ginger harvest season, DATO creates employment opportunities for 50–70 female workers, with priority given to women from ethnic minority groups, who represent over 40% of the workforce. These opportunities not only provide stable income but also allow women to actively participate in a professional value chain, strengthening their voice and role within their families and communities.
  • By empowering women, DATO fosters inclusive growth, proving that when women thrive, entire communities grow stronger and more resilient.
